1. A new way to think about escape

Taking a break from work is crucial to living your best life.  That said, not all of us enjoy sitting in a beach chair with a light read.  One alternative to a traditional vacation is based on the idea of a sabbatical – taking time off while pursuing a goal that puts us in a state of “flow”.  Whether this is writing, or hiking, or learning a new skill, a sabbatical is a great way to combine escape with productivity.

 

2. NC for the win!

A shout-out to my home state!  Forbes recently named North Carolina the Best State for Business 2017.  Assessed across these categories: business costs, labor supply, regulatory environment, economic climate, growth prospects, and quality of life, the Tar Heel State topped the rest in all six categories.  It’s a great place to live…and work.

 

3. Beyond Weinstein

As we are discovering on an almost daily basis, sexual harassment in the workplace extends far beyond Hollywood.  In these days of #MeToo, it’s time to shine a light on this issue across all businesses.  Huffpost contributor Jeffery Tobias Halter maintains that this isn’t just a women’s issue – men too need to stand up to this pervasive, damaging problem.

 

4. Another reason to put down your phone: your happiness.

Did you know that back in 2010, when Steve Jobs introduced Apple’s revolutionary iPad, he didn’t allow his own children to use it?  From then until now, today’s tech industry insiders know that our addictive screen technology is not making us happy.  This recent TED talk by psychologist Adam Alter explains why.
